LASER RANGEFINDERS: In using a laser rangefinder, the rangefinder is aimed at the object you want to determine its distance, using a viewing port. With the target in sight, the rangefinder sends a laser beam to the target object. They do not require mapping of the course. 

GPS RANGEFINDERS: For GPS rangefinders also call GPS watch for golf, less time is required in determining the distance between you and your target on the golf course. Reason being that measurements are used in finding the points around the course. Mappings are done on the trail in this process.  

OPTICAL RANGEFINDERS: Optical rangefinders make use of prisms and an average of two lenses, each situated at one end of the other. The distance between the set target and the device is obtained by measuring the angle obtained by the method while in focus.

Optical rangefinders 

In using optical rangefinders, a better focus yields a better result; it is reciprocal. You have to keep your eyes set on the eyepiece, turning the parallax to get a better focus on your set target. Keep steady and remain focused on your destination until it reaches a reading.
